In 2023, Indonesia holds an important position in international forum as the Chairman of ASEAN. The momentum of Indonesia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2023 is expected to give rise to new initiatives in overcoming challenges and issues concerning the region and the world, including in the tourism sector. The Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, who delivered a keynote speech in a General Lecture titled “Tourism Outlook 2023: Towards Inclusive, Resilient and Sustainable Tourism through Indonesia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN” at Universitas Pancasila, on February 22, 2023, mentioned, “On a regional scale, we encourage the tourism sector to be developed inclusively and sustainably. Based on Indonesia’s experience, tourism has proven to be able to contribute greatly to post-pandemic economic recovery.”
During Indonesia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2023, it is estimated that more than 300 meetings will be held in Indonesia. In this way, Indonesia’s Chairmanship can contribute to increasing tourism and the country’s foreign exchange potential both at the national and regional levels, especially through organizing events. “This is where event management becomes a strategic issue because events that are well managed will be able to become attractions and increase the competitive advantage of a tourism destination,” added Panca Rudolf Sarungu, Chief Community of Friends of National Tourism and Creative Economy (Tepanas).
Dean of the Faculty of Tourism, Universitas Pancasila, Devi Roza Kausar, stated that there are at least two strategic things that need to become mainstream, namely an inclusive, resilient and sustainable tourism management strategy, as well as a strategy for increasing tourism human resources, especially in managing conventions and events. “This is what underlies us to open the Applied Undergraduate Study Program in Convention & Event Management at Pancasila University.” The presence of the Convention and Event Management study program at Universitas Pancasila is expected to enrich the choices of prospective students who want to be involved in the tourism sector, as well as improve the quality of human resources for tourism actors who are competent, skilled and provide added value in the development of inclusive and sustainable Indonesian tourism.
